About Jessie Fleming
One of the most composed and technically gifted midfielders in women's football, Jessie Fleming converted the decisive penalty in Canada's 2020 Olympic gold medal shootout against Sweden — a moment that crystallised her reputation for performing under the greatest pressure.
Jessie Fleming's story
London, Ontario
Jessie Fleming was born on 31 March 1998 in London, Ontario — not England, but the mid-sized Ontario city named after its British counterpart. She developed through Canadian youth football and made her senior international debut aged just 15, becoming one of the youngest players in Canadian football history. She attended UCLA before turning professional.
Chelsea's Creative Force
Fleming joined Chelsea FC Women in 2021, moving to one of the WSL's top clubs. Her technical quality and composure on the ball made her an immediate asset. She has been one of Chelsea's most consistent performers — a player who controls the tempo of games and delivers when the pressure is highest.
Olympic Gold
Fleming's defining moment came at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In Canada's semi-final against the USA, she scored a penalty in the shoot-out as Canada eliminated their great rivals. In the final against Sweden, with the match tied at 1-1 after 120 minutes, Fleming stepped up and scored the decisive penalty to win Canada's first Olympic gold in women's football. The calm, precise execution under extraordinary pressure summed up her character.
Canada's Midfield Leader
Fleming has become one of the most important players in the Canadian national team — the creative link between defence and attack. At 26 she is in the prime of her career and represents the next generation of Canadian women's football leadership following Christine Sinclair's retirement.
