About Lauren James
One of the most naturally gifted players in women's football, Lauren James is a technically dazzling winger of exceptional creativity and power, and a UEFA Women's Euro 2025 champion with England.
Lauren James's story
The James Family
Lauren James was born on 29 September 2001 in Lewisham, south London. She came through the youth ranks at both Arsenal and Chelsea before making her senior first-team debut for Arsenal on 29 October 2017, aged 16, the second-youngest player in the club's history to do so. Her older brother Reece now captains Chelsea and England.
Breakthrough at Manchester United
James joined Manchester United in 2018 and became central to their rise, scoring 14 goals in 18 games during the 2018-19 promotion campaign and netting the club's first-ever goal in the Women's Super League era. Three seasons established her as one of English football's brightest young talents, before Chelsea signed her permanently in July 2021.
2023 World Cup Brilliance and Controversy
The 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia was James's global breakthrough. She scored four goals in England's group and knockout matches before being sent off against Nigeria in the round of 16 for standing on an opponent, ruling her out for two matches. England reached the final without her, losing to Spain.
European Champion
James started in England's Euro 2025 final win over Spain on penalties, becoming a continental champion after a fitness scare in the semi-final. In March 2026 she signed a new contract keeping her at Chelsea until 2030, and that year she was voted Chelsea's Player of the Season for a second time and shortlisted for the PFA Players' Player of the Year.
Using Her Platform
In September 2024, James launched the LJ10 Scholarship, a charity initiative supporting young girls from underrepresented backgrounds getting into football, saying she had seen talented players leave the game for lack of support. She has also spoken openly about receiving racist abuse on social media, saying critics "fuel" rather than discourage her.
