Sam Kerr's story
Fremantle's Star
Samantha May Kerr was born on 10 September 1993 in Fremantle, Western Australia. Her father Roger and brother Daniel are both former professional AFL players, and Sam initially tried AFL before falling in love with football. She debuted for Perth Glory aged just 15 and quickly announced herself as a player of extraordinary natural ability.
The Chelsea Years
Kerr joined Chelsea FC Women in January 2020 — the first of a series of record-breaking contracts that reflected her status as the best player in the world. At Chelsea she has been exceptional — winning four consecutive WSL titles, multiple FA Cups, and reaching the UEFA Women's Champions League final. Her hat-trick against Bristol City in her first full season announced her arrival in England.
2023 World Cup Overhead Kick
The 2023 Women's World Cup, played on home soil in Australia and New Zealand, was one of sport's great tournaments. Kerr's overhead kick to complete a hat-trick against England in the semi-final in front of 75,000 at Stadium Australia — before a global audience of hundreds of millions — is widely considered one of the greatest goals ever scored in the women's game. Australia finished third.
Matildas Captain & Injury
Kerr has captained the Matildas through their most successful era. In early 2024 she suffered a serious ACL injury that has kept her out of action. She faces a significant rehabilitation period but has spoken about her determination to return and lead Australia at future tournaments. She is engaged to USWNT star Kristie Mewis, whom she met at Chelsea.
