Mathew Ryan's story
Early Life & Rise
Born in Plumpton, New South Wales (AUS), Ryan showed early promise with Central Coast Mariners in the A-League (AUS), debuting as a teenager in 2010. His performances earned him a move to Belgium, where Club Brugge gave him his first taste of European football.
European Career
Ryan's career took in an impressive range of clubs: after Club Brugge he moved to Valencia (ESP), then Brighton & Hove Albion (ENG) where he became a Premier League regular. Loan spells at Arsenal (ENG) and Genk (BEL) followed before stints at Real Sociedad (ESP) and Levante (ESP). His consistency across multiple top leagues made him one of the most travelled and experienced goalkeepers of his generation.
Socceroos Captain
Ryan has been Australia's first-choice keeper since 2012 and was named captain in 2019. He won the Golden Glove at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup on home soil and led the Socceroos to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he kept two clean sheets — the best record by an Australian keeper at a World Cup.
