About Mamadou Sangaré

Mamadou Sangaré rose through Red Bull Salzburg's loan system to a Ligue 1 Team of the Year season at Lens, then became Brentford's record buy in August 2026. A box-to-box presence with an eye for a tackle, he's the latest arrival in the club's ambitious summer rebuild.

Mamadou Sangaré's story

From Bamako to Salzburg's Loan System

Born in Bamako on 26 June 2002, Sangaré joined Red Bull Salzburg's academy pipeline in 2020 and spent four years out on loan, at FC Liefering, Grazer AK, Zulte Waregem and TSV Hartberg, before signing permanently for Rapid Wien in July 2024.

The Boy They Called 'Gaucher'

In Bamako he was a prodigy at Asac, his neighbourhood club, and Yeelen Olympique signed him at 12. Almost nobody in the Malian capital used his name: he was simply "Gaucher" — the left-hander — after the silky left foot that did the damage. Nicolas Fernandez, a technical consultant at Yeelen Olympique, remembers what defenders could not read: "He had an incredible ability to feint. You thought the ball was there, but it had already gone somewhere else."

Leaving Bamako at 18

Red Bull Salzburg offered him a contract at 18 and he arrived in Austria in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, stammering out a few words of German on day one purely to show he meant to fit in. What followed was four seasons out on loan. "It has not always been easy for me since the start of my career," he said in May 2026. "I had to adapt to the language, the culture, the way football is played in Europe."

Seydou Keita, and a Shirt at Home

Sangaré grew up idolising Seydou Keita, the Mali great who played 210 matches for Lens between 2002 and 2007. "He is an idol for every young Malian," Sangaré said in May 2026. "Someone I have adored forever. I used to watch him on television." The two finally met at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Keita offered him advice on his game — and Sangaré went on to join Keita's old club, and to be reminded of him constantly by Lens supporters. He also keeps a Marc-Vivien Foé shirt at home, years before winning the award named after him.

The 'Too Frail' Label, and His Answer to It

Arriving in Europe, Sangaré was written off in some quarters as physically underdeveloped — and he has never accepted it. "I was seen as someone who was not strong enough. Everyone has their way of seeing things, but I do not agree," he said in May 2026, arguing his build is an advantage that lets him be more supple in the tackle. His favourite part of the game gives away the rest of his character: "When I win the ball back, it is as if I had scored a goal."

Breakthrough at Rapid Wien

Sangaré made 44 appearances in his first season at Rapid Wien in 2024-25, helping the Austrian club reach the UEFA Conference League quarter-finals and finish fifth in the Bundesliga, form that persuaded Lens to sign him that August.

Ligue 1 Team of the Year

In his single season at Lens, Sangaré started the 2026 Coupe de France final as the club beat Nice 3-1 to lift the trophy for the first time in their 120-year history, having already been runners-up three times. Lens finished second in the table behind Paris Saint-Germain that season and qualified for the Champions League, with Sangaré named in the UNFP Ligue 1 Team of the Year.

A Club-Record Move to Brentford

Brentford signed Sangaré from Lens for a club-record fee of around £38.5m, brought in as a replacement for Jordan Henderson following his departure to Chelsea.
