About Matthias Sammer
Matthias Sammer is the only player born in East Germany to win the Ballon d'Or — receiving the award in 1996 after captaining Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League title and Germany to the European Championship. He played as a libero sweeper who drove forward to join attacks — a positional evolution that preceded the modern ball-playing centre-back. His career was cut short at 30 by a serious knee injury.
Matthias Sammer's story
East Germany to Dortmund
Sammer grew up in East Germany — playing for Dynamo Dresden in the East German league — before reunification allowed him to join VfB Stuttgart in 1990. He moved to Inter Milan in 1992 but struggled with the tactical adjustment. He returned to Germany with Borussia Dortmund in 1993 — and immediately found his peak form. Two Bundesliga titles, a Champions League, and the Ballon d'Or followed across four seasons that represent the finest sustained performance by a German player of his generation.
The Libero
Sammer played as a libero — a sweeper who positioned himself behind the defensive line but drove forward to join attacks, receiving the ball from defenders and carrying it into midfield. The role predated the modern ball-playing centre-back by 20 years. His ability to read the game, intercept passes, and then immediately transition into an attacking player gave Dortmund (GER) a tactical dimension that most opponents had no framework to defend.
1996
In 1996, Sammer won the European Championship with Germany and the Ballon d'Or. He scored two goals at Euro 1996 — including the winner in the semi-final against England — and was named the tournament's best player. The Ballon d'Or was the first won by a German player since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981, and the only one won by someone born in East Germany.
