About Nadine Angerer
Nadine Angerer was the best goalkeeper in women's football for much of the 2000s and 2010s — a commanding, athletic shot-stopper who kept a clean sheet in every match of Germany's 2007 Women's World Cup triumph and was named FIFA Women's World Player of the Year in 2013.
Nadine Angerer's story
Bavaria to the World
Nadine Angerer was born on 10 November 1978 in Lohr am Main, Bavaria. She grew up as a replacement for Germany legend Silke Rottenberg, waiting patiently in reserve before her own era of dominance began. Her athleticism and confidence between the sticks were evident from the moment she took over as Germany's first choice.
The 2007 World Cup Clean Sheet Record
Angerer produced one of the most remarkable individual World Cup performances in history at Germany 2007 — she did not concede a single goal throughout the entire tournament. Germany won all six matches, with Angerer keeping six consecutive clean sheets including the final against Brazil. It is one of the greatest individual goalkeeping performances in any World Cup.
FIFA World Player of the Year 2013
In 2013, Angerer became only the second goalkeeper ever (male or female) to win the FIFA Women's World Player of the Year award. She was 34 years old at the time — a testament to her longevity and sustained excellence. The award recognised not just her 2013 performances but a career defined by consistency.
Portland & Retirement
Angerer brought her talents to the NWSL with Portland Thorns (2014–2015), helping establish the league's credibility. She retired from playing in 2016 and moved into coaching, working as a goalkeeper coach in Germany and with various national programmes.
