Philipp Lahm
Full-back / Midfielder · Bayern Munich · Germany
About Philipp Lahm
Philipp Lahm is the greatest full-back of his generation and one of the most intelligent footballers ever to have played the game. He spent his entire career at Bayern Munich (GER), winning eight Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues. He captained Germany to the 2014 World Cup. At 170cm, he was the smallest starting full-back at the top level — compensated by intelligence, technique, and positional awareness that surpassed any contemporary.
Philipp Lahm's story
Munich's Son
Lahm was born in Munich (GER) and joined Bayern Munich (GER)'s academy at 11. He spent his entire professional career at the club — interrupted by a two-year loan to Stuttgart (GER) where he established himself as Germany's finest young full-back. He was Bayern Munich (GER) captain from 2011 to his retirement in 2017.
The Versatile Leader
Lahm played as right full-back, left full-back, and central midfielder to an equivalent level of excellence — a range of positional mastery almost without precedent in modern football. Under Pep Guardiola at Bayern, he regularly played as an inverted midfielder, organising play from inside the half rather than from the wing. His passing accuracy in this role exceeded 93%.
UEFA Euro 2024
After retiring in 2017, Lahm became Director of the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament in Germany — overseeing the organisation of the largest single-sport event hosted in Germany since the 2006 World Cup. The tournament was widely praised as a success. His transition from player to senior administrator has been among the most seamless in German football.
