About Roger Milla
Roger Milla is African football's most iconic tournament player — a man who came out of retirement at 38 to score four goals at the 1990 World Cup and help Cameroon reach the quarter-finals (the best result by an African team until Senegal 2002 and Morocco 2022). He scored again at the 1994 World Cup at 42, becoming the oldest scorer in World Cup history. His corner-flag celebration — hips swaying, arms raised — is the most replicated African football image in history.
Roger Milla's story
Italia '90
Roger Milla had retired from international football in 1988. In 1990, Cameroon's president Paul Biya personally persuaded him to return for the World Cup in Italy. He was 38. Coming on as a substitute in multiple matches, he scored four goals — two against Romania, one against Colombia (the goal where his corner-flag dance became iconic), one again against Colombia in the quarter-final. Cameroon beat Argentina in the group stage and Colombia in the round of 16 before losing to England in extra time. The tournament changed African football.
The Celebration
When Milla scored against Colombia in the round of 16, he ran to the corner flag and danced — hips moving, arms spread, pure joy. The image was photographed by every agency covering the tournament and appeared on front pages across Africa. It became the most replicated celebration in African football history. When asked about it, Milla said it was spontaneous — he ran to the flag and the dance just happened.
1994
At the 1994 World Cup in the USA, Milla was 42. He came on as a substitute against Russia and scored — becoming the oldest scorer in World Cup history. Cameroon lost the match 6-1, but the individual achievement — a man who retired before the tournament, came back, dominated one World Cup at 38, and then scored in another at 42 — is one of sport's most extraordinary stories.
