About Sepp Maier
Sepp Maier is Germany's greatest goalkeeper before Oliver Kahn and one of the finest in football history — winning the World Cup (1974), the European Championship (1972), and the European Cup three consecutive times with Bayern Munich (GER) (1974, 1975, 1976). He made 422 consecutive Bundesliga appearances — the longest unbroken run in the history of German football. He was named FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year four times. His career ended in a car accident in 1979.
Sepp Maier's story
422
Sepp Maier made 422 consecutive Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich (GER) — never missing a league match across a period that stretched from 1966 to 1979. The record remains the longest unbroken run in German football history. In 13 seasons of consistent availability, Maier became synonymous with reliability — the one constant in a Bayern side that changed around him. His run ended not through injury or poor form but through the car accident that ended his career.
The Three Cups
Bayern Munich (GER) won the European Cup in 1974, 1975, and 1976 — three consecutive titles with Maier as their goalkeeper. The squad also included Beckenbauer, Müller, Breitner, and Schwarzenbeck. In that company, Maier provided the defensive foundation that the attacking talent required. His performances across three European Cup campaigns — clean sheets, penalty saves, command of his area — placed him among the finest European Cup goalkeepers of any era.
The Eccentric
Maier was known as 'Die Katze von Anzing' — The Cat of Anzing — for his agility and reflexes. He was also known for his personality: warm, humorous, eccentric in his pre-match routines. He became Bayern's goalkeeping coach after retiring — working in the role for over 25 years, coaching Oliver Kahn and then Manuel Neuer to become the next two German goalkeepers to dominate the position. His influence on German goalkeeping across three generations is without parallel.
