About Stefan Effenberg
Stefan Effenberg is one of the most complex personalities in German football — sent home from the 1994 World Cup for giving fans the middle finger, banned from the national team for eight years, then returning to captain Bayern Munich (GER) to the treble in 2001 as one of the finest midfield performances the Bundesliga has produced. He scored the decisive penalty in the 2001 Champions League final shootout against Valencia (ESP).
Stefan Effenberg's story
The Finger
Stefan Effenberg was sent home from the 1994 World Cup by Germany coach Berti Vogts after giving the middle finger to German fans who were jeering his performance against South Korea. It was one of football's most public individual incidents of the era — the gesture broadcast by every television network covering the tournament. He was banned from the national team for eight years as a consequence.
Bayern 2001
Effenberg returned to Bayern Munich (GER) in 1998 — as a different, more complete player. He became Bayern's captain and driving force, winning four Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2001. In the Champions League final against Valencia (ESP), after Bayern had gone behind and equalised, the match went to penalties. Effenberg stepped up and scored the decisive kick. Bayern won. He was 32 years old. Eight years after the finger incident, he had won football's highest club prize.
The Complete Midfielder
Effenberg's second spell at Bayern (1998-2002) produced the finest sustained midfield performances in Bundesliga history of the era. He combined passing quality, goalscoring, leadership, and defensive awareness in a way that German football had not seen since Matthäus. At his peak, he was the best midfielder in Europe — recognised with multiple Kicker magazine awards and widespread acknowledgement from his peers.
