About Uwe Seeler
Uwe Seeler spent his entire 18-year professional career at Hamburger SV — rejecting a £1 million offer from Inter Milan — and became one of Germany's most beloved footballers. He scored 404 goals for Hamburg (GER). He appeared at four World Cups (1958, 1962, 1966, 1970) — one of only four players to score in all four — and scored 43 goals in 72 international appearances. In 1970 he scored a famous backheeled goal against England at the World Cup. He died in July 2022.
Uwe Seeler's story
The Rejection
In 1961, Inter Milan offered Hamburger SV £1 million for Uwe Seeler — at the time, an almost incomprehensible sum. Seeler declined personally. He wanted to stay in Hamburg (GER), where he had been born, where he had played since youth, where his family lived. The decision cost him financially and almost certainly cost him major European trophies. But it gave German football one of its most complete loyalty stories, and gave Hamburg (GER) a figure of civic identity that lasted beyond his career.
Four World Cups
Seeler appeared at the World Cups of 1958, 1962, 1966, and 1970 — scoring in all four, one of only four players in history to do so. At the 1970 World Cup he was 33 and played against England in the quarter-final. With West Germany trailing 2-0, he scored a famous backheeled goal — his back to goal, the ball flicking in off his neck — to make it 2-2. Germany went on to win 3-2 in extra time. The goal is one of the most unusual in World Cup history.
Hamburg
Seeler scored 404 goals for Hamburger SV in 587 appearances — the most by any player in the club's history. His relationship with the city became civic: he was honorary president for decades, his face appeared on Hamburg (GER) marketing, and when he died in July 2022, the city mourned as it would for a statesman. No player in German football is more completely identified with a single city.
