About Andoni Zubizarreta
Andoni Zubizarreta is Spain's greatest goalkeeper and the most capped Spanish player of all time with 126 international appearances. He won four La Liga titles with Barcelona (ESP) and the Copa del Rey multiple times, appearing in two Champions League finals (1986, 1994). He represented Spain at four World Cups — the record for a Spanish goalkeeper — and is considered the definitive Spanish goalkeeping benchmark until Iker Casillas.
Andoni Zubizarreta's story
126 Caps
Zubizarreta made 126 international appearances for Spain — more than any other Spanish player until Iker Casillas surpassed him in 2013 — across 15 years and four World Cups. He was the undisputed first choice for Spain through four different national team coaches, reflecting a consistency of performance and professionalism that is rarely matched across such an extended international career.
Barcelona's Dream Team
Zubizarreta joined Barcelona (ESP) from Athletic Bilbao (ESP) in 1986 — Johan Cruyff's first major signing — and was the goalkeeper for Cruyff's "Dream Team" that won four consecutive La Liga titles (1991-1994). He appeared in the 1986 European Cup final (losing on penalties to Steaua Bucharest (ROU)) and the 1994 Champions League final (losing 4-0 to AC Milan) — experiencing both ends of the tournament's emotional spectrum.
The Basque
Zubizarreta was born in Gasteiz (Vitoria-Gasteiz), the capital of the Basque Country — and spent the first five years of his career at Athletic Bilbao (ESP), the club that fields only Basque players. His move to Barcelona (ESP) in 1986 was therefore culturally significant: a Basque player leaving the most exclusively Basque club for the club that represents Catalonia's identity. He made it work.
