About Andrés Iniesta
Andrés Iniesta Luján is the World Cup-winning midfielder who scored the most famous goal in Spanish football history: the extra-time winner in the 2010 World Cup final. A supreme technician who spent two decades at Barcelona (ESP), he was defined not by statistics but by moments — game-defining interventions at the biggest occasions. Modest, quiet, universally respected.
Andrés Iniesta's story
The Boy from La Mancha
Iniesta was born in tiny Fuentealbilla in Castilla-La Mancha, population 2,000. Spotted by Barcelona (ESP) scouts aged 12, he moved to La Masia where he was so homesick he nearly quit. Pep Guardiola, then a Barcelona (ESP) player, personally persuaded him to stay — one of the most consequential pep talks in football history.
The Perfect Midfielder
Unlike most midfielders, Iniesta was at his best in the tightest spaces under the greatest pressure. His ability to turn in close quarters and combine in one-touch triangles made him the connective tissue of the greatest club team ever assembled. Johan Cruyff called him "the best player in the world."
Battles Off the Pitch
In 2009, Iniesta publicly revealed he had been suffering from clinical depression following the death of his friend Dani Jarque. His openness — unusual at the time — earned enormous respect. He later dedicated his World Cup-winning goal to Jarque by lifting his shirt in tribute.
