About Carles Puyol
Carles Puyol is Barcelona (ESP)'s greatest ever captain and one of the most committed defenders in football history. He spent his entire career at Barcelona (ESP), winning six La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, and becoming the physical and moral heart of the greatest club side ever assembled — Pep Guardiola's Barcelona (ESP). He also won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup (scoring the semi-final header), and Euro 2012 with Spain.
Carles Puyol's story
La Pobla de Segur to the Bernabéu
Puyol was born in La Pobla de Segur, a small town in the Catalan Pyrenees. He joined Barcelona (ESP)'s La Masia academy at 17 and made his debut in 1999. He spent 15 years at the club — an extraordinary tenure during which he won every major trophy in world football and became the physical embodiment of the club's values.
The 2010 World Cup Header
In the 2010 World Cup semi-final against Germany, with the score at 0-0, Puyol rose to meet a corner and headed the ball powerfully into the net — one of the most important headed goals in Spanish football history. It put Spain 1-0 up; they won 1-0. Puyol celebrated with a raw, almost animal intensity. Spain went on to win the World Cup.
Injury and Retirement
Puyol's latter career was disrupted by serious knee injuries that ultimately forced him to retire in 2014. He underwent seven knee operations in four years. He played the first Clásico of the 2013-14 season, then never appeared for Barcelona (ESP) again. He retired in May 2014 with one of the most decorated club careers in European football history.
