About Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon plays as a dynamic left winger for Barcelona, having joined from Newcastle United in 2026 after becoming one of the Premier League's most effective wide players following his earlier move from Everton. An England international with explosive pace and directness, Gordon thrives at the highest level and made an instant impact with a brace of assists in the Catalan giants' colours.

Anthony Gordon's story

Everton to St. James' Park

Gordon grew up as an Evertonian and came through their academy before breaking into the first team. His performances caught Newcastle (ENG)'s attention and they paid £45 million in January 2023 — a significant investment in a young English winger they believed could be a top-level player for years. His impact at Newcastle (ENG) was immediate and impressive.

Roots in Huyton

Gordon grew up in Huyton, Merseyside, playing for local side Whiston Juniors before a release from Liverpool's academy led Everton to sign him at 11. His father, Keith, hung a tyre from the goalpost in the family garden and had a young Gordon shoot through the gap for hours, a drill Gordon has credited with sharpening the finishing that later caught Newcastle's eye. He is the eldest of three footballing brothers, with Brandon and Reuben also raised on Merseyside's competitive five-a-side scene.

A Boyhood Dream Realised at Camp Nou

Gordon completed a £69.3m move to Barcelona from Newcastle United in the summer of 2026, telling the club he had long dreamed of playing at Camp Nou since childhood, having quietly learned Spanish in anticipation of the move years before it happened.

A Newcastle Farewell

Gordon left Newcastle after three seasons in which he was voted the club's Player of the Season for 2023-24 and helped end their 70-year wait for a major trophy, scoring in both legs of the 2025 League Cup semi-final against Arsenal despite missing the final itself through suspension.

Mentors, Mindset and a Reputation for Character

Everton's Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman were, in his own words, "huge mentors" who took a genuine interest in him early on, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin called him an "honest, hard-working lad" whose self-belief never tipped into arrogance. Ahead of his 2026 Barcelona move, former Newcastle teammate Matt Ritchie called him "laser-focused" and someone who "thinks big." He studies chess and boxes to sharpen his focus, and after reacting furiously to being substituted at Brentford in April 2023, later apologised and said Eddie Howe's response strengthened their bond. He also calls Tottenham's Son Heung-min, who plays his position, a role model, praising him as "so humble."
