About Caroline Seger

The most capped Swedish player in history with 234 caps, Caroline Seger was the engine and captain of Swedish women's football for nearly two decades — a relentless, intelligent midfielder who led her country to three Olympic finals.

Caroline Seger's story

Kungsbacka Roots

Caroline Seger was born on 19 March 1985 in Kungsbacka, near Gothenburg. She rose through Swedish football to become the national team's captain and most capped player ever, earning 234 caps across 18 years of international football — a record for either men's or women's football in Sweden.

Club Excellence

Seger played for FC Rosengård (formerly Malmö FF) for much of her career, making the club a powerhouse in Swedish women's football. She also had stints in North America with Portland Thorns and Philadelphia Independence, gaining experience in different football environments.

Olympic Silver Medallist

Seger led Sweden to three Olympic finals — silver in 2016 (Rio) and bronze in 2020 (Tokyo). The 2016 Silver Medal run was one of Sweden's finest performances — they famously knocked out USA in the quarter-finals on penalties (the match that prompted Hope Solo's infamous 'cowards' comment). Seger was the captain throughout.

Record & Retirement

Seger announced her retirement from international football in 2023, ending a remarkable career. With 234 caps she is Sweden's most capped footballer of all time, male or female. She has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in sport and publicly came out during her career.
