About David Raya
David Raya is the embodiment of the modern goalkeeper — equally assured with his feet as with his hands. After making his name at Brentford (ENG), his move to Arsenal displaced Aarón Ramsdale in one of English football's most competitive goalkeeping battles, and he earned Spain recognition to prove he belonged at the very top.
David Raya's story
The Long Road
Born in L'Hospitalet near Barcelona (ESP), Raya came through Cornellà's academy before moving to England as a teenager. He joined Blackburn Rovers in 2012 and spent seven seasons progressing through their youth and reserve teams into the first team, becoming a reliable Championship goalkeeper. Brentford (ENG) signed him in 2019 for £3 million, and the move changed his career.
Brentford & the Mikel Arteta Call
At Brentford (ENG), Raya was a key figure in the club's remarkable rise from the Championship to the Premier League. His composure in possession and willingness to play out from the back made him ideally suited to modern, press-resistant football. Arsenal took him on loan in 2023, then signed him permanently for £27 million in 2024 after he had comprehensively displaced Ramsdale as the first choice.
Spain International
Raya's consistency at Arsenal earned him recognition from the Spanish national team. Competing with some of Europe's finest goalkeepers, his inclusion in the Spain squad underlined how far he had come from his Blackburn (ENG) days. He won Euro 2024 with Spain as a squad member, a landmark moment in a career built through patience and hard work.
