About Declan Rice

Declan Rice was the most expensive English footballer in history when Arsenal signed him for £105 million in 2023, and he has justified every penny. A commanding, athletic midfielder who can suffocate opposition attacks and drive his team forward, he became Arsenal's captain and one of the best midfielders in world football within two seasons of arriving.

Declan Rice's story

Released at 14

Rice joined Chelsea's academy at the age of seven but was released at 14, with Chelsea concluding he was not good enough to make it as a professional. He was devastated. West Ham took him on, and Rice turned rejection into motivation — a recurring theme in a career built on resilience and hard work. He made his West Ham debut in 2017 at 18 and never looked back.

West Ham Captain

At West Ham, Rice grew from a raw teenager into one of Europe's elite midfielders. Under David Moyes he became the engine of a West Ham side that reached the Europa League final in 2022–23. His athleticism, reading of the game and ability to transition from defence to attack marked him out as something genuinely special. He captained West Ham and won the club's Player of the Year award multiple times.

The £105m Move

In the summer of 2023, Arsenal paid a club-record £105 million for Rice, a British record fee for a midfielder at the time. His passing range, relentless pressing and leadership transformed Arsenal's midfield straight away: PFA Team of the Year in his first season, runner-up for Arsenal's own Player of the Season award that year, then the outright winner in 2024-25 and again in 2025-26.

England Captain

Rice won three caps for the Republic of Ireland at youth level before switching allegiance to England in 2018, a decision that drew criticism at the time but has been fully vindicated. He was appointed England's full captain in March 2024, and led the side to a World Cup third-place finish in July 2026 after two runners-up finishes at previous major tournaments.
