About Fabio Cannavaro
Fabio Cannavaro is the only defender in the 21st century to win the Ballon d'Or — awarded in 2006 after he captained Italy to the World Cup. At 176cm he was undersized for a central defender, but his reading of the game, timing, and positioning made him virtually impossible to beat. He captained Italy's 2006 World Cup winners and was named the tournament's best defender.
Fabio Cannavaro's story
Naples to the World
Cannavaro grew up in Naples (ITA) and developed at Napoli before joining Parma (ITA) — where he became one of Italy's finest defenders in the late 1990s, alongside Gianluigi Buffon, Lilian Thuram, and Hernán Crespo in arguably the best Parma (ITA) side ever assembled.
World Cup 2006
Cannavaro captained Italy through the 2006 World Cup in Germany — a tournament Italy won without conceding from open play. His partnership with Alessandro Nesta (who was injured and replaced by Marco Materazzi) and his own leadership made Italy the tournament's tightest defensive unit. He was awarded both the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year — the only defender in the modern era to achieve this.
A Career in Controversy's Shadow
Cannavaro's Juventus career coincided with the Calciopoli scandal of 2006, in which Juventus were relegated to Serie B for their involvement in match-fixing. He left for Real Madrid as the scandal broke. Despite his individual success, the Calciopoli shadow has hung over his peak years.
