About Gheorghe Popescu
Gheorghe Popescu — "Gică" — is Romania's greatest footballer alongside Gheorghe Hagi and one of the finest sweeper-midfielders in European football of the 1990s. He was the defensive spine of Romania's remarkable run to the 1994 World Cup quarter-final — a team featuring Hagi, Dumitrescu, and Raducioiu that reached the last eight by defeating Argentina. He won La Liga with Barcelona (ESP), the Champions League with Galatasaray, and led Romania to their finest World Cup performance.
Gheorghe Popescu's story
Romania 1994
Romania's 1994 World Cup squad — featuring Hagi, Popescu, Dumitrescu, and Raducioiu — was the finest national team Eastern Europe had produced since Hungary 1954. Popescu was its defensive organiser: a sweeper who could read play, distribute cleanly, and lead by example. Romania defeated Colombia and Argentina in the group stages, then beat Argentina on penalties in the last 16, before losing to Sweden in the quarter-final. It was the finest World Cup performance by a Romanian team.
A Career of Clubs
Popescu played for PSV Eindhoven (NED) (Dutch titles), Tottenham, Barcelona (ESP) (La Liga), and Galatasaray (UEFA Cup, Turkish titles) — a European career that reflected his adaptability. At Galatasaray, he formed part of a squad that beat Arsenal in the 2000 UEFA Cup Final on penalties — one of Turkish football's greatest nights. He captained Romania for 115 international appearances.
Romania's Captain
Popescu captained Romania in 115 of his 115 international appearances — the national record — and was the defensive foundation of the team Hagi and the attacking players played in front of. His relationship with Hagi — creative antagonist and defensive anchor — is one of Eastern European football's great partnerships.
