About Gigi Riva
Gigi Riva — "Rombo di Tuono" (Thunder Roll) — is Italy's greatest striker and all-time top scorer (35 goals in 42 games). He spent his entire career at Cagliari — turning down Juventus, Inter, and AC Milan repeatedly — and led them to the 1969-70 Serie A title, their only championship in history. He broke his left leg twice in national team games but returned each time. He died in January 2024.
Gigi Riva's story
Thunder Roll
Riva was born in Leggiuno, in Varese province. His father died when he was eight; his mother died when he was ten. He was raised partly in orphanages before football rescued him. He joined Cagliari in 1963 — a small Sardinian club — and became so beloved that no offer from any bigger club, however large, could move him.
Cagliari's Only Title
In 1969-70, Riva led Cagliari to the Serie A title — the only championship in the club's history and arguably Italian football's most romantic league triumph. He scored 21 goals in 28 games. When Cagliari were presented with the Scudetto, the island of Sardinia held a public holiday. The scale of local pride matched that of any European capital.
Italy's All-Time Scorer
Riva holds Italy's all-time international scoring record with 35 goals in 42 appearances — a ratio of 0.83 goals per game that no Italian striker has come close to matching. He broke his left leg playing for Italy against Austria and Yugoslavia but returned each time. He retired in 1977 after a knee injury at 32. He died in Cagliari on January 22, 2024.
