Jennifer Hermoso's story
Madrid Roots
Jennifer Hermoso Fuentes was born on 9 May 1990 in Alcobendas, a suburb of Madrid. She came through the Atlético Madrid women's academy before moving to Barcelona, where she became one of the most prolific scorers in Liga F history. She has also played in France (Montpellier, PSG) and Mexico (Tigres UANL), accumulating experience across multiple football cultures.
Spain's All-Time Top Scorer
Hermoso is Spain's all-time leading scorer in women's international football, having scored over 50 goals for La Roja across a 15-year international career. Her combination of technical quality, movement, and finishing make her one of the most complete forwards Spain has produced.
World Cup 2023
Hermoso was a key player in Spain's historic 2023 Women's World Cup triumph in Australia and New Zealand — Spain's first ever World Cup. The tournament was overshadowed by an incident where Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales kissed her on the lips during the trophy ceremony without her consent. Hermoso was categorical that the kiss was not welcome; the incident sparked a global conversation about power and respect in sport.
Legal Case & Advocacy
Hermoso's public statement about the incident led to criminal charges being brought against Rubiales. She became an involuntary symbol of the fight against abuse of power in sport. Rubiales resigned and was convicted of sexual assault in 2025. Throughout, Hermoso continued playing and became an even more prominent voice for women's rights in football.
