About Xabi Alonso
Xabi Alonso is one of the finest deep-lying playmakers in football history — a player who could spray 60-yard passes with the accuracy of a short pass, and read the game a moment before everyone else. He won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships, the 2010 World Cup, the Champions League twice, and multiple league titles in England, Spain, and Germany. He is now one of the most celebrated managers of his generation.
Xabi Alonso's story
Tolosa's Maestro
Alonso was born in Tolosa in the Basque Country, the son of former Real Sociedad player Migue Ángel Alonso. He made his debut for Real Sociedad at 17 and joined Liverpool (ENG) in 2004. His five years at Liverpool (ENG) — covering the miraculous 2005 Champions League win — established him as one of the world's finest midfielders.
Spain's Golden Era
Alonso was the metronome of Spain's 2008-2012 era of dominance — the only national team to win three consecutive major tournaments (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012). His ability to control tempo, break up attacks, and then rebuild from deep made him the foundation on which Xavi and Iniesta's creativity was built.
Management
Alonso has become one of the most celebrated managers in Europe — taking Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023-24 (the first in German league history) before his appointment at Bayern Munich (GER). His tactical sophistication, calm demeanour, and football intelligence have made him one of the most sought-after managers of his generation.
