About Martin Ødegaard

Martin Ødegaard is Arsenal's captain and one of the Premier League's finest creative midfielders — a player once billed as the most hyped teenager in world football who spent years searching for his best home before finding it in north London. His vision, close control and leadership transformed Arsenal's mentality, culminating in the club's first Premier League title in 22 years, and he captains Norway at senior level too.

Martin Ødegaard's story

Norway's Wonderkid

Ødegaard burst onto the scene as a 15-year-old at Strømsgodset, becoming the youngest player ever to appear in the Norwegian top flight. His performances attracted every major club in Europe. In January 2015, aged just 16, he signed for Real Madrid after trials at Barcelona (ESP), Liverpool (ENG), Arsenal and Bayern Munich (GER). The football world held its breath — was this the next great talent?

The Loan Years

Life at Real Madrid was not straightforward. Ødegaard spent seven years at the club but played just 11 first-team games, spending most of his development on loan. He had spells at Heerenveen, Vitesse, and Real Sociedad — where he finally found consistent form and earned rave reviews — before arriving at Arsenal on loan in January 2021. He was electric. Arsenal wasted no time: they signed him permanently that summer for £30 million.

Arsenal's Captain

At Arsenal, Ødegaard has been transformative. He was appointed club captain in 2022 at the age of 23, becoming the creative conductor of Mikel Arteta's fluid attacking system. His technical quality — close control, incisive passing, the ability to receive under pressure and play out — is exceptional. That leadership paid off in 2025-26: a 1-0 win over Burnley effectively sealed Arsenal's first Premier League title in 22 years, and Ødegaard lifted the trophy after a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, calling it 'a crazy, crazy feeling'. Twelve days later Arsenal were denied a domestic-and-European double, losing the Champions League final to holders PSG 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Budapest.

Ending a 28-Year Wait

Ødegaard has long been Norway's captain and most important player, and in 2025-26 he finally got to lead them back to the World Cup. Norway went through qualifying unbeaten in eight matches, with Erling Haaland's 16 goals powering a perfect record, to reach the tournament for the first time since 1998. At the finals, Norway finished Group I as runners-up and beat both Côte d'Ivoire and Brazil in the knockout rounds before losing to England in the quarter-finals — the country's best World Cup run in a generation, with Ødegaard's captaincy and creativity central to it.
