About Michael Laudrup
Michael Laudrup is the greatest Danish footballer in history and one of the most creative players the game has ever produced. He played for Juventus, Barcelona (ESP) (under Johan Cruyff, winning four consecutive La Liga titles), Real Madrid (winning La Liga), and Ajax — a trophy collection that places him among the most decorated players of the modern era. Cruyff called him "the most complete player I have ever worked with." He boycotted Denmark's Euro 1992 triumph.
Michael Laudrup's story
Cruyff's Assessment
Johan Cruyff managed Laudrup at Barcelona (ESP) (1989-1994) — and said of him: "Michael Laudrup is the most complete player I have ever worked with. The way he sees the game, the way he uses the ball, his movement — I have seen Pelé, Cruyff the player, Best, Di Stéfano. And Laudrup is the most complete player I have worked with." Coming from Cruyff — who had managed Neeskens, Milla, Romário, and Stoichkov — the assessment is extraordinary.
Barcelona to Real Madrid
Laudrup left Barcelona (ESP) for Real Madrid in 1994 — a transfer that shocked Spain and delighted Bernabéu. He won La Liga with Real Madrid in his first season, becoming one of a tiny number of players to have won the title with both Clásico clubs. He was feted at both. When he returned to the Nou Camp with Madrid (ESP), Barcelona (ESP) fans gave him a standing ovation that reportedly lasted several minutes.
Euro 1992
Denmark won the 1992 European Championship — the tournament's greatest shock, called up 10 days before it started after Yugoslavia was withdrawn due to the Balkan War. Laudrup was absent. He had a dispute with coach Richard Møller Nielsen and chose not to be part of the squad. His brother Brian Laudrup played and won. It is football's most remarkable "what if" — what if the best player had been available when Denmark won their greatest honour?
