About Raphinha
Raphinha is one of football's most exciting wide players, a Brazilian winger who drifts between the right and centre to devastating effect. After setting the Premier League alight at Leeds United, his move to Barcelona brought him to a bigger stage where he has delivered consistently, becoming one of LaLiga's best attackers. His performances for Brazil have made him a crucial part of the Seleção's attack.
Raphinha's story
Growing Up in Restinga
Born on 14 December 1996 in Porto Alegre, he grew up in Restinga, one of the city's poorest neighbourhoods. The family slept in one room, dogs and cats included. Trials at Grêmio and Internacional went nowhere, partly because of his slight frame, so he played in local várzea tournaments.
Spotted by Deco
Scouted at Imbituba, he joined Avaí's under-20s at 18. Former Barcelona midfielder Deco spotted him there and arranged a move to Vitória Guimarães, where he scored 15 league goals in 2017-18 and was named the club's Breakthrough Player of the Year in 2017.
Sporting, Rennes and Leeds
He spent 2018-19 at Sporting CP before a spell at Rennes. Leeds then signed him in October 2020 for a reported £17m, and under Marcelo Bielsa he made 65 league appearances and netted 17 times over two seasons.
Flick's Barcelona
Barcelona signed him in July 2022 for a reported €58m, and he said he fell in love with the club because of Ronaldinho. In 2024-25 under Hansi Flick he hit 34 goals from 57 appearances, won La Liga Player of the Season and finished joint-leading scorer in the Champions League.
With Brazil
He debuted on 7 October 2021 against Venezuela, played at the 2022 World Cup and made the 2024 Copa América Team of the Tournament. At the 2026 World Cup he was hurt in the 3-0 win over Haiti, and Brazil went out in the round of 16.
