Frank Rijkaard
Central Midfielder / Defensive Midfielder · Ajax · Netherlands
About Frank Rijkaard
Frank Rijkaard is one of the greatest midfielders in Dutch and world football history — the competitive backbone of both Ajax and the Netherlands' 1988 European Championship-winning squad, and the defensive anchor of the AC Milan side that won back-to-back European Cups in 1989 and 1990. His physical presence, technical quality, and intelligence gave both club and country a midfield foundation that enabled Gullit and Van Basten to flourish. He later managed Barcelona (ESP) to the Champions League in 2006.
Frank Rijkaard's story
Milan's Midfield
When Arrigo Sacchi assembled AC Milan in 1988, he needed a midfielder who could both destroy and create — one who would protect the back four while providing the platform for Gullit and Van Basten. Rijkaard was that player. His combination of physical dominance, technical quality, and intelligence made him irreplaceable. At 191cm, he could cover every area of the midfield. In the 1989 European Cup final, he scored the opening goal. Milan (ITA) won 4-0.
Euro 1988
The Netherlands' 1988 European Championship triumph is the finest moment in Dutch football history — Marco van Basten's volley against the Soviet Union, Ruud Gullit's dreadlocked celebration. But Rijkaard was the reason the attacking players could perform with such freedom. His defensive work in midfield — covering, intercepting, winning the ball — gave Gullit the space to operate and Van Basten the service he needed. The three of them represent one of international football's finest triumvirates.
Manager
After retiring, Rijkaard managed Barcelona (ESP) from 2003 to 2008, winning the Champions League in 2006 — with Ronaldinho, Xavi, Iniesta, and Deco — and La Liga twice. He is one of a very small group of individuals to win the Champions League as both player and manager, and the only Dutch person to have done so with two different clubs.
