About Marc Overmars
Marc Overmars is one of the most explosive wingers of the 1990s — the left wing of Ajax's legendary 1994-96 generation that won the Champions League, and later of Arsène Wenger's famous Invincibles-era Arsenal. He scored two goals in Arsenal's 1997-98 title run, including a decisive goal at Manchester United, and contributed 12 goals and 8 assists in the Double season.
Marc Overmars's story
Emst's Express
Overmars was born in Emst in Gelderland and joined Ajax's academy as a teenager. He burst into the first team in the early 1990s and was part of the Ajax generation — alongside Seedorf, Davids, Kluivert — that won three Eredivisie titles and the 1995 Champions League before dispersing across Europe.
Arsenal's Wing Weapon
Wenger signed Overmars for £7m from Ajax in 1997 and immediately deployed him as the attacking weapon of Arsenal's title challenge. He scored 12 goals and contributed 8 assists in the 1997-98 Double season — including a crucial goal at Old Trafford that swung the title race Arsenal's way. His pace and directness made him the most feared winger in the Premier League.
Barcelona and Injury
Overmars moved to Barcelona (ESP) for £25m in 2000 — a big fee that reflected his status as one of the world's top wingers. But recurring knee injuries increasingly restricted him, and he retired in 2004 after further surgeries. He became Ajax's director of football — a role he held until 2022 when inappropriate messages to a female employee led to his resignation.
