About Mary Earps
The FIFA Best Women's Goalkeeper in both 2022 and 2023, Mary Earps is England's most important goalkeeper in a generation — an explosive, commanding shot-stopper whose penalty save in the 2023 World Cup final against Spain became one of the defining moments of that tournament.
Mary Earps's story
Nottingham to the Top
Mary Earps was born on 7 March 1993 in Nottingham. She came through the Nottingham Forest girls' system and had a long journey to the top — including spells at Birmingham City, Doncaster Rovers Belles, and Wolfsburg in Germany — before signing for Manchester United Women in 2019 when the club launched their professional women's team.
Manchester United's No.1
At Manchester United, Earps became the club's first true goalkeeping star in the women's game — a symbol of United's growing ambition. She was outstanding as United won promotion to the WSL and established themselves as a top club. Her performances attracted the attention of England coach Sarina Wiegman and eventually earned her the No.1 shirt ahead of Euro 2022.
EURO 2022 & World Cup 2023
Earps was England's starting goalkeeper in their EURO 2022 triumph — keeping crucial clean sheets throughout. At the 2023 Women's World Cup final against Spain, with England trailing 1-0, Earps made a stunning penalty save from Jennifer Hermoso that briefly gave England hope. She was named the tournament's best goalkeeper. The controversy that her replica shirt wasn't being sold by Nike generated global headlines.
PSG & Beyond
After her Manchester United contract expired, Earps signed for Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 — taking her talents to the French league. She won the FIFA Best Women's Goalkeeper award in consecutive years (2022 and 2023) and remains England's first-choice goalkeeper.
