About Trevor Francis
Trevor Francis became Britain's first £1 million footballer when Brian Clough signed him for Nottingham Forest in February 1979. He repaid the fee immediately — scoring the winning goal in the 1979 European Cup final against Malmö. He went on to play for Manchester City, Sampdoria, Atalanta, Rangers, QPR, and Sheffield Wednesday — a career of consistent excellence across multiple leagues, cut short by injuries but marked by brilliant individual performances.
Trevor Francis's story
The Million Pound Man
In February 1979, Brian Clough paid Birmingham City £1,000,000 for Trevor Francis — the first time a British footballer had been valued at seven figures. The fee created an enormous public debate about the value of footballers. Francis repaid it within five months: his diving header in the 1979 European Cup Final against Malmö in Munich (GER) won Forest their first European Cup. No player has ever more directly justified a transfer fee.
Sampdoria
After two seasons at Forest, Francis moved to Sampdoria in 1982 — joining Liam Brady and becoming part of an English-Irish attacking unit in Italian football that was genuinely unusual. He spent four years in Italy, scoring 44 goals across Sampdoria and Atalanta, and gaining a tactical education that he would bring to his later management career.
The Manager
Francis managed Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham City, and Crystal Palace after his playing career — building teams on the same attacking principles he had played with. He died in July 2023, aged 69. The football world paused to remember a player who had been the most expensive British footballer in history and used the price to produce the most decisive contribution in a European final.
