Vivianne Miedema's story
Hoogeveen's Prodigy
Vivianne Miedema was born on 15 July 1996 in Hoogeveen, a small city in the northeastern Netherlands. She was identified as an exceptional talent in childhood and joined SC Heerenveen's women's programme. She made her professional debut aged 14 and her Netherlands debut aged 15 — the youngest debutant in Dutch women's football history.
Bundesliga & Arsenal
Miedema moved to Bayern Munich at 16 — a remarkable move that showed her readiness for elite football. At Bayern she developed significantly before Arsenal signed her in 2017 at age 21. At Arsenal she has been exceptional — breaking WSL records for goals (she scored eight in a single game against Bristol City in 2019) and assists. She is the WSL's all-time record scorer.
Netherlands' Captain
Miedema captained the Netherlands to the 2019 Women's World Cup final — where they lost 2-0 to the dominant USA — and is the all-time top scorer for the Dutch national team with over 95 goals. She combines exceptional technical ability with football intelligence that belies her age; she reads the game like a veteran despite still being in her late 20s.
Relationship & ACL
Miedema is in a relationship with Arsenal and England teammate Beth Mead — one of women's football's most celebrated couples. In December 2022 she suffered an ACL injury that kept her out for much of 2023. She returned to form at Manchester City, where she moved in 2024 as her Arsenal contract expired.
