About Abby Wambach
The all-time top scorer in international football history with 184 goals, Abby Wambach was a ferocious aerial forward who redefined what a women's centre-forward could be. Her headers, late goals, and sheer physical presence made her the most feared striker of her era.
Abby Wambach's story
Rochester to the World
Mary Abigail Wambach was born on 2 June 1980 in Rochester, New York — the seventh of eight children in a Catholic family. She was playing competitive football by age five and by high school was already drawing national attention. She played at the University of Florida, winning the Hermann Trophy (US college player of the year) in 2001.
The Perfect Weapon
Standing 178 cm with exceptional leap and timing, Wambach transformed aerial attacking play. She didn't just win headers — she directed them with precision. Her ability to arrive late into dangerous positions, coupled with a thunderous shot, made her virtually unstoppable in the penalty area. She was the top scorer at the 2003 and 2007 World Cups.
The Header Heard Round the World
In the 2011 World Cup quarter-final against Brazil, the USA trailed 2–1 deep into extra time. In the 122nd minute, with the match seemingly lost, Wambach met Megan Rapinoe's cross with a towering header to equalise. The US went on to win on penalties. It is widely considered the greatest moment in women's football history.
Record & Retirement
Wambach retired in December 2015 having scored 184 international goals — a world record for any player, male or female, at that time. She won two World Cups (2015) and two Olympic gold medals (2004, 2012). Since retiring she has become an author and speaker; she married author Glennon Doyle in 2017 and the couple live in Florida.
