Alex Morgan's story
California Dream
Alexandra Patricia Morgan was born on 2 July 1987 in San Dimas, California. She came to football relatively late — only starting competitive play at 14 — but her pace and natural finishing ability accelerated her development rapidly. She starred at UC Berkeley and was the No. 1 pick in the 2011 WPS draft by the Western New York Flash.
Club Career
Morgan spent the core of her club career with Portland Thorns, becoming the face of the NWSL. A spell at Tottenham Hotspur in 2021 (during a COVID-disrupted NWSL season) brought her to an English audience. She moved to Orlando Pride before becoming the star of the San Diego Wave from 2022, helping establish them as one of the NWSL's top sides.
International Star
Morgan made her senior US debut in 2010 and quickly became the team's talisman. She scored 28 goals in 2012 — the most in a calendar year by a US player at that time. Her tea-sipping celebration against England at the 2019 World Cup became one of the sport's most talked-about moments. She retired from international football in 2024 with 123 goals in 224 caps.
Beyond the Pitch
Morgan married MLS player Servando Carrasco in 2014; they have a daughter, Charlie, born in 2020. She is the co-author of the bestselling 'Kicks' children's book series and has been on the cover of Sports Illustrated, TIME magazine, and FIFA video games. She announced her retirement from football in August 2024.
