About Brandi Chastain
Brandi Chastain is immortalised by a single image — kneeling in joy, shirt whipped off, after converting the decisive penalty in the 1999 Women's World Cup final. Beyond that moment she was one of the most versatile and technically accomplished defenders of her era.
Brandi Chastain's story
California Roots
Brandi Chastain was born on 21 July 1968 in San Jose, California, growing up in a sporting family that encouraged her football from an early age. She played at Santa Clara University, where she became an All-American and established herself as one of the country's best collegiate players.
The Versatile Defender
Chastain was unusual in that she began her international career as a forward before reinventing herself as a left back — a position she made her own through intelligence, timing, and an ability to burst forward. She was rarely beaten one-on-one and read the game exceptionally well.
1999 — The Moment
The 1999 Women's World Cup final at the Rose Bowl drew 90,185 fans — a world record for a women's sporting event at the time. After a goalless 120 minutes against China, the match went to penalties. Chastain, stepping up last, drove the ball into the net with her weaker left foot. She tore off her shirt and dropped to her knees — the image went around the world overnight and became a defining symbol of women's sport.
Legacy & Life After Football
Chastain retired in 2010 after a career spanning three decades at club and international level. She coached at Santa Clara and became a prominent advocate for youth football safety, particularly regarding heading restrictions for children. She is married to coach Jerry Smith and has a son, Cameron.
