About Carli Lloyd
Carli Lloyd is one of the most decorated American footballers ever — a two-time FIFA World Player of the Year whose hat-trick in the 2015 World Cup final, including a goal from the halfway line, stands as one of the greatest individual final performances in football history.
Carli Lloyd's story
New Jersey Roots
Carli Anne Lloyd was born on 16 July 1982 in Delran, New Jersey. She played at Rutgers University and impressed enough to earn her first senior cap in 2005. Her early USWNT career was inconsistent — she was left off the 2003 World Cup roster — but she rebuilt her game with singular focus under coach Pia Sundhage.
The World Cup Final Hat-Trick
The 2015 Women's World Cup final against Japan will forever be associated with Lloyd. She scored in the 3rd and 5th minutes before unleashing a shot from the halfway line — spotting the Japanese goalkeeper off her line — that looped into the net in the 16th minute. A hat-trick in 16 minutes in a World Cup final. It remains one of the most staggering individual performances in any football tournament.
Consistency at the Top
Lloyd was the engine of the USWNT for over a decade. Two-time FIFA Women's World Player of the Year (2015 and 2016), she won two World Cups and two Olympic gold medals. She was known for her obsessive fitness routines and work ethic — attributes that kept her competing at the highest level well into her late 30s.
Retirement
Lloyd retired from football in October 2021 with 316 caps and 134 international goals. She is one of the most capped and highest-scoring players in USWNT history. She married professional golfer Brian Hollins in 2013 and lives in New Jersey. She has written a memoir and remains active in football broadcasting.
