About Didier Drogba CBE
Didier Drogba is Chelsea's greatest ever player and one of football's most clutch performers — a man who scored in four FA Cup finals and the Champions League final. He is also one of football's great humanitarians: his public appeal helped broker a temporary ceasefire in the Ivory Coast civil war in 2005. Both footballer and peacemaker.
Didier Drogba CBE's story
Abidjan to Europe
Drogba was sent to live with his uncle in France aged five when his parents could not afford to keep him in Ivory Coast. He struggled through lower French divisions before breaking through at Guingamp and Marseille (FRA). Chelsea paid £24m for him in 2004 — a signing that defined the Roman Abramovich era.
Mr. Big Game
Drogba scored in four consecutive FA Cup finals for Chelsea — unique in the competition's history. His 87th-minute equaliser in the 2012 Champions League final, then his winning penalty in the shootout, against Bayern Munich (GER) in their own stadium, cemented his legend. Arjen Robben said it was one of the most devastating experiences of his career.
Peace Broker
After Ivory Coast qualified for the 2006 World Cup, Drogba made an emotional television appeal to both sides in the country's civil war to lay down arms. A temporary ceasefire followed. He is credited by UN officials as having contributed to the peace process that eventually ended the conflict.
