About Morgan Rogers
Morgan Rogers went from a Manchester City academy release to Aston Villa's Player of the Season inside two years, then became the most expensive British player in history when Chelsea paid a British-record £117 million for him in July 2026. He earned his first England caps in November 2024 and started/came off the bench in England's run to the 2026 World Cup semi-final.
Morgan Rogers's story
From Man City Release to Bargain of the Season
Rogers came through Manchester City's academy but never broke into the first team, spending two seasons on loan at Lincoln City and Bournemouth to get regular football. Middlesbrough (ENG) signed him permanently in July 2023, and it proved the making of him: 33 appearances and 7 goals in all competitions, including finishing as the EFL Cup's top scorer during Boro's run to the semi-finals. Aston Villa moved for him in January 2024 for just £8 million — one of the shrewdest signings of the season — and he was voted Villa's Player of the Season within 18 months of arriving.
England Recognition and a Growing Reputation
Rogers made his senior England debut as a substitute in a 3-0 Nations League win over Greece in November 2024, and scored his first international goal against Wales at Wembley in October 2025 en route to a place in England's 2026 World Cup squad. At club level he scored a Champions League hat-trick against Celtic in January 2025 — two goals inside the first five minutes — becoming only the second-youngest Englishman to do so, and signed a contract extension at Villa Park through 2031. Pundits have compared his blend of power and close control to Jamal Musiala and a young Wayne Rooney.
Off the Pitch
The middle of three brothers to parents Deborah and Howard, Rogers grew up a boyhood West Brom fan in Halesowen and was a childhood friend of Jude Bellingham. Teammates and coaches describe him as the loudest person in the dressing room and the squad's self-appointed class clown off the pitch, but completely locked in once he crosses the white line — Unai Emery's mantra to him is simply "try, try, try." Away from football he's known for a distinctive fashion sense (he has a personal partnership with PUMA) and a love of basketball and LeBron James. One quirk of note: the "ice cold" goal celebration now associated with Chelsea's Cole Palmer actually originated with Rogers at Middlesbrough — Palmer borrowed it after seeing him do it first.
The Move to Chelsea
Rogers's stock had never been higher: the 2025-26 season brought 10 goals and 6 assists in 37 Premier League appearances, followed by a World Cup semi-final with England. Chelsea moved decisively that summer, winning a two-club race that had captivated the transfer market for weeks.
