About Marcel Desailly
Marcel Desailly is the only player to have won the Champions League in consecutive seasons with two different clubs — Marseille (FRA) (1993) and AC Milan (1994) — and one of the most physically dominant defenders of his era. Born in Ghana, he moved to France as a child and became a central figure in the France team that won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. He spent eight years at Chelsea after Milan (ITA).
Marcel Desailly's story
Accra to Brittany
Desailly was born in Accra (GHA), Ghana, to a Ghanaian diplomat father. He moved to France with his mother and stepfather at age 4 — his stepfather, Roger Desailly, was a French diplomat. He grew up in Brittany and joined Nantes (FRA)'s academy before moving to Marseille (FRA) and then Milan (ITA).
Consecutive Champions League Titles
In 1992-93, Desailly won the Champions League with Marseille (FRA) — the only French club ever to do so. The following season, he joined AC Milan and won the Champions League again — the 1994 final against Barcelona (ESP), where Milan (ITA) won 4-0. He is the only player in history to have won the trophy in back-to-back seasons with two different clubs — a record that has never been threatened.
France's Rock
Desailly was Deschamps's partner at the base of France's midfield — or Thuram's partner at centre-back — across the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 triumphs. His physical dominance and composure were the defensive backbone of both triumphs. He was sent off in the 1998 final against Brazil — France won 3-0 despite playing with ten men for the last 22 minutes.
