About Gianfranco Zola MBE
Gianfranco Zola is the most beloved foreign player in Chelsea's history — voted the greatest Chelsea player of all time by fans in 2003 — and one of the most technically gifted attacking midfielders in the history of the Premier League. He played under Diego Maradona at Napoli, where he learned the art of the number 10. At Chelsea, he made the Premier League fall in love with Italian football at a time when the two cultures had barely met.
Gianfranco Zola MBE's story
Maradona's Pupil
Zola was born in Oliena, Sardinia — a village of 7,000 people — and spent his formative professional years at Napoli, where Diego Maradona was the world's best player. He described his time with Maradona as a "masterclass in football": watching, learning, absorbing the principles of the number 10 position from the finest practitioner who ever played it. When Maradona left, Zola was ready.
Chelsea's Greatest
Ruud Gullit signed Zola for Chelsea in November 1996 for £4.5m — a modest fee for a player who had just helped Parma (ITA) win the UEFA Cup. He played 229 league games across seven seasons, scored 59 league goals and provided 88 assists, won three cup competitions, and was voted Chelsea's greatest ever player by fans in 2003. He was 36 years old when he retired from Chelsea.
The Overhead Kick in Training
Zola is the only player to be awarded an MBE for services to football without being British — a honour that reflects how completely he became part of English football's culture. At his retirement press conference at Chelsea, manager Claudio Ranieri openly wept. Zola himself said: "Chelsea gave me everything. I gave Chelsea everything I had. I think it was a fair exchange."
