About Geovany Quenda
Geovany Quenda is a Guinea-Bissau-born, Portugal-raised winger who rose through Sporting CP's academy to become one of the most talked-about young talents in European football, setting a string of youngest-scorer records at the club before Chelsea agreed a deal for him over a year in advance of his actual arrival. Left-footed but operating from the right, his pace and one-on-one quality made him a starter for Sporting's title-winning side while still a teenager.
Geovany Quenda's story
Bissau to Benfica to Sporting
Born in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, Quenda moved to Portugal as a child and began playing for local side Damaiense in Amadora before Benfica brought him into their academy at the Benfica Campus. He left the club at 13, after Benfica failed to provide the accommodation it had promised him, and joined rivals Sporting CP instead — a switch that now looks like one of the more consequential academy decisions in recent Portuguese football.
Younger Than Ronaldo, Younger Than Simão
Quenda made his Sporting first-team debut on 3 August 2024, becoming the youngest player ever to score for the club when he netted in a 4-3 Supertaça defeat to Porto, aged 17 years and 95 days. On 26 October 2024 he broke the record again, becoming Sporting's youngest-ever league goalscorer at 17 years, five months and 27 days — surpassing both Simão Sabrosa (1997) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2002).
A Title, a Double, and a Year's Wait for Chelsea
Sporting announced in March 2025 that Quenda would join Chelsea in the summer of 2026, over a year before the move actually happened. In the meantime he helped Sporting win the 2024-25 Primeira Liga and Taça de Portugal double, was named the league's Young Player of the Season, and had his release clause raised from €45m to €100m — with Chelsea's agreed fee reported at £40m.
Portugal's Next Generation
Quenda represented Portugal at Under-17 level, reaching the final of the 2024 European Championship and being named in the Team of the Tournament, before making his Under-21 debut in October 2024 and earning Team of the Tournament honours again at the 2025 European U21 Championship. He received his first senior Portugal call-up in August 2024, for Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Scotland.
