About Tobin Heath

Tobin Heath was the most technically gifted winger in American women's football — a player of extraordinary close control, creativity, and unpredictability who could unlock any defence with a single touch.

Tobin Heath's story

New Jersey & College

Tobin Powell Heath was born on 29 May 1988 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. She played at the University of North Carolina — the breeding ground of American women's football — and was drafted first overall by Sky Blue FC in 2009 before transferring to the Washington Freedom.

Portland & PSG

Heath became the heartbeat of Portland Thorns, winning three NWSL championships with them. She spent two seasons in France with Paris Saint-Germain (2013–14, 2016–17), learning a more possession-based game that refined her already brilliant technical qualities. Her dribbling ability was compared to the best wide players in the world game.

USWNT Impact

Heath earned 182 caps for the United States, winning two World Cups and two Olympic gold medals. She was often deployed as a supersub with the USWNT — her ability to change games from the bench was a key weapon in the US armoury. Injuries limited her later career, but when fit she remained unplayable.

Faith & Retirement

Heath has spoken openly about her Christian faith and how it grounds her — she often writes Bible verses on her wrist tape. She retired from club football with the Chicago Red Stars in 2023. She is private about her personal life but has been an advocate for player welfare in women's football.
