About Filippo Inzaghi
Filippo Inzaghi is the greatest penalty-area predator of his era — a player who scored 313 career goals almost entirely from within 12 yards of the goal. He is the Champions League's joint second-highest scorer (70 goals), won two Champions League medals with AC Milan (2003, 2007), and scored both goals in the 2007 final. He was famously described by Sir Alex Ferguson as a player who "can't walk on water because he'd be offside."
Filippo Inzaghi's story
Piacenza's Poacher
Inzaghi was born in Piacenza and moved through lower Italian clubs before Juventus signed him from Atalanta in 1995. He became immediately prolific — 97 goals in 189 games — winning the Serie A title twice and developing the instinctive movement that would define his career.
Milan and the Champions League
Inzaghi moved to AC Milan in 2001 and won two Champions League medals. The 2007 final against Liverpool (ENG) in Athens (GRE) was his greatest night — he scored both goals, including a deflected shot that crept in and a finish after being played in by Kaká. Milan (ITA) won 2-1. He was 33.
The Offside Expert
Inzaghi was flagged offside an extraordinary number of times throughout his career — using the tightest possible lines to gain advantages in the penalty area. He reportedly stayed in the penalty area during training sessions, never involving himself in wider play. His relationship with the offside trap — staying just on the right side — was considered an art form by analysts of his era.
