About Gianni Rivera
Gianni Rivera — "Il Golden Boy" — won the Ballon d'Or in 1969 and is AC Milan's greatest ever player, spending his entire 20-year career at the club and winning two European Cups, three Serie A titles, and two Coppa Italias. He was the prototype of the Italian trequartista — the attacking midfielder who plays between the lines — and is considered by many analysts as the player who defined the position's possibilities for all who followed.
Gianni Rivera's story
Il Golden Boy
Rivera was nicknamed "Il Golden Boy" at 15 — before he had played a professional match — because his technical quality and football intelligence were so clearly exceptional. He joined AC Milan at 17 and never left. In 20 years, he made 658 appearances, scored 164 goals, and provided 188 assists — the statistics of one of Italian football's greatest one-club careers. He won the Ballon d'Or in 1969.
The 1969 European Cup
Rivera was the architect of Milan (ITA)'s 1969 European Cup Final win over Ajax — a 4-1 victory in which he controlled the midfield throughout and created two of the goals. He won the Ballon d'Or that year — the only time a player from a club that didn't play in England, Germany, or Spain won the award in the 1960s. It reflected how completely he had dominated European football.
Senator
After retiring, Rivera became an Italian Senator — serving in parliament from 1987 to 2006 — one of football's most significant transitions to political life. He used his platform to advocate for youth sport and physical education — the causes that had driven him since his "Golden Boy" discovery by Milan (ITA).
