About Zvonimir Boban
Zvonimir Boban is Croatia's most influential footballer of the 1990s — the midfield architect of the national team's extraordinary 3rd place finish at the 1998 World Cup and a key figure in AC Milan's Serie A dominance. He spent 10 years at Milan (ITA), winning four Serie A titles and the Champions League. His kick at a police officer during the 1990 Yugoslav Cup Final — defending a Dinamo Zagreb (CRO) fan from police brutality — became one of football's most politically significant images.
Zvonimir Boban's story
Imotski's Captain
Boban was born in Imotski, in what was then Yugoslavia. He joined Dinamo Zagreb (CRO)'s academy and became the most technically gifted Croatian player of his generation. His combination of elegant left-footed play, physical presence, and leadership made him the natural captain of Croatia's national side.
The 1990 Moment
On May 26, 1990 — during the Yugoslav Cup final between Dinamo Zagreb (CRO) and Red Star Belgrade (SRB) — fighting broke out in the stands between Dinamo's fans and Serbian nationalists. Boban watched a police officer beat a Dinamo fan on the pitch and kicked the officer to the ground. The incident — captured on camera — became one of football's most politically charged images. Yugoslavia was months away from civil war. Boban was suspended for six months.
AC Milan and Croatia's 3rd Place
At AC Milan under Capello and then Sacchi, Boban was the creative heart of a midfield alongside Marcel Desailly and Demetrio Albertini. At the 1998 World Cup he captained Croatia to 3rd place — the greatest achievement in Croatian football before Luka Modrić's 2018 runners-up finish.
